have to agree with John! I will continue collecting both, email and first name, from my subscribers. Also i would recommend everybody to set up a custom “already subscribed” page. Try it out on your own. It is frustrating
Have had that experience with conversionrateexperts.com, where I forgot that I was already signed in and wanted to download a free report. Just invest 10 more minutes, set up a already-subscribed page, insert a short note, that this email is already subscribed to the list and, most important, add a link for the free report in there, as it will be the main reason sbdy. subscribed again.

I have tested collecting both email and first name vs only the email.
Your optin rates are always higher when you ask someone to enter the least information possible…
But as always, you have to test and see what works best for you
